Four things to check before you book

| Walking distance, not map distance | In hilly cities like Istanbul, 400 metres can be 400 metres almost vertically. Check the elevation, not just the pin on the map. |
| Whether the pool or spa has women-only hours | Rarely advertised on the booking page. Ask which days and times, because “on request” often turns out to mean no. |
| Where alcohol is served | A hotel can serve halal food and still have a bar in the lobby you walk through every evening. Ask about the lobby and pool, not just the restaurant. |
| Whether breakfast is really included | The cheapest rate usually is not, and adding it at the desk costs more than booking it in. |
