Rome, the coastlines, and centuries of history in every direction — Italy rewards slowing down more than almost anywhere.

Where to Stay

Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood trades proximity to the Colosseum for cobblestone charm and better local restaurants. In smaller cities like Florence, staying just outside the historic center usually means lower prices for a short walk in. Compare options in our stay guide.

What to Eat

Regional food rules apply strictly — carbonara is a Rome dish, not a Tuscany one, and ordering a cappuccino after 11am marks you instantly as a tourist. Let each region’s specialty guide your ordering rather than sticking to one “Italian food” script.

Sample 3-Day Itinerary (Rome)

Day 1 — Ancient Rome

Start early at the Colosseum, then walk through the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill on the same combined ticket. Have dinner in Trastevere.

Day 2 — Vatican City

Book the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel for the morning, visit St. Peter’s Basilica, and spend a slow afternoon in the nearby Prati neighborhood.

Day 3 — Piazzas & Fountains

Walk from the Pantheon to Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, then relax in the Villa Borghese gardens before a last dinner.

Opening times and ticket rules change — check each sight before you go.

What to Wear

Cobblestones and hills mean comfortable shoes matter more than style here. Church visits require covered shoulders and knees, so keep a light layer on hand even in summer heat.
