Italians dress with real intention year-round — packing here is as much about fit and fabric as it is about matching the season correctly.

Spring (March–May)

Mild with occasional rain, roughly 12–20°C. Light layers plus a jacket for evenings and church interiors, which stay cool.

Summer (June–August)

Very hot, especially in the south — Rome, Naples, and Sicily regularly exceed 32°C. Breathable natural fabrics, with a light cover-up for church visits.

Autumn (September–November)

Widely considered the best season to visit — mild and pleasant through October, cooler and wetter by November. A light-to-mid jacket covers most of it.

Winter (December–February)

Cold in the north, especially Milan and the Alps; milder but still cool in the south. A real coat and scarf for the north, a warm layer usually enough further south.

One Thing Locals Notice

Church visits enforce covered shoulders and knees strictly, sometimes turning visitors away at the door — keep a light layer on hand even in August heat. For the full trip breakdown, see our Italy travel guide.
