Istanbul mixes cosmopolitan fashion with more conservative dress, and the weather swings from mild to cold across the year — both matter for what goes in the case.

Spring (March–May)

Mild with regular rain, typically 12–20°C. A light rain jacket and a warm layer for cooler mornings.

Summer (June–August)

Hot and dry, often above 28°C. Light, breathable clothing, with a scarf or shawl kept handy for mosque visits.

Autumn (September–November)

Widely considered the best travel season — mild and pleasant into October, cooling and wetter by November. Layers cover the whole stretch.

Winter (December–February)

Cold and damp, with occasional snow in Istanbul itself. A proper coat, waterproof shoes, and a warm layer are worth the suitcase space.

One Thing Locals Notice

A scarf or light shawl earns its keep for mosque visits — shoulders and knees should stay covered, and women may be asked to cover their hair inside active mosques. For the full trip breakdown, see our Turkey travel guide.
