Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul straddles two continents, and tourism here has been climbing faster than almost anywhere else on this list.

Where to Stay

Sultanahmet puts you steps from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, while Beyoğlu offers a livelier, more local nightlife scene across the Bosphorus. See our stay guide for more on choosing between them.

What to Eat

Breakfast here is an event — spreads of cheese, olives, eggs, and fresh bread that can last hours. Street-side simit and a proper Turkish coffee are worth seeking out over any hotel breakfast buffet.

Sample 3-Day Itinerary (Istanbul)

Day 1 — Sultanahmet

Visit Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern, then explore Topkapı Palace in the afternoon. Keep shoulders and knees covered for the mosques.

Day 2 — Bazaars & the Bosphorus

Shop the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar in the morning, take a Bosphorus cruise after lunch, and climb Galata Tower for the evening view.

Day 3 — The Asian Side

Take the ferry to Kadıköy for its food market and cafés, wander Moda by the water, and finish with a traditional hammam back on the European side.

Opening times and ticket rules change — check each sight before you go.

What to Wear

Istanbul mixes cosmopolitan and conservative — modest coverage (shoulders and knees) is expected when visiting mosques, so pack at least one layer that covers easily.
