What to wear in Germany

Good outerwear does more work in Germany than any single outfit underneath it — and which coat you need depends heavily on the season.
Spring (March–May)
Cool and variable, typically 8–17°C with regular rain. A mid-weight jacket and a warm layer.
Summer (June–August)
Warm and generally pleasant, occasionally hot inland. Light clothing during the day, a layer for cooler evenings.
Autumn (September–November)
Cool and increasingly wet, especially by November. A proper jacket and waterproof shoes.
Winter (December–February)
Genuinely cold, especially in the south and the Alps, with real snow. An insulated coat, hat, and gloves matter far more than a stylish thin one.
One Thing Locals Notice
Underdressing for December cold — thin jacket, no hat — is the most common visitor mistake, especially at outdoor Christmas markets. For the full trip breakdown, see our Germany travel guide.
