What to Wear in France

French style leans quiet and put-together rather than loud — tailored basics in solid colors beat statement pieces or visible logos. What actually goes in the suitcase, though, depends on which season you land in.

Spring (March–May)

Mild but changeable, typically 8–18°C with regular rain. A light-to-mid trench or jacket, a foldable umbrella, and one warm layer for cool mornings and evenings cover most days.

Summer (June–August)

Warm in the south and inland, but Paris itself stays cooler and greyer than most visitors expect, with evenings that can dip enough for a light layer. Breathable fabrics for the day, a cardigan or light jacket for after dark.

Autumn (September–November)

Cool and often wet, close to spring in feel but trending colder as it goes. A proper mid-weight coat and a real umbrella earn their space from October onward.

Winter (December–February)

Cold and grey, especially in the north — a real wool or insulated coat, scarf, and waterproof shoes matter far more than anything stylish but thin.

One Thing Locals Notice

Sneakers paired with resort-style clothing reads as distinctly touristy — a simple leather flat or loafer blends in just as well and holds up better on cobblestones. For the full trip breakdown, see our France travel guide.
