What to wear in Japan

Japan rewards a clean, coordinated wardrobe over anything loud year-round — but the four seasons here are genuinely distinct, so timing shapes the packing list a lot.
Spring (March–May)
Mild but cooler than photos of cherry blossom season suggest, especially late March into April. Layers, with a light jacket for morning and evening.
Summer (June–August)
Hot and humid, with a rainy season in June. Lightweight, breathable fabric and a compact umbrella.
Autumn (September–November)
Mild and comfortable, a favorite season for the fall foliage — light layers through October, a proper jacket by November.
Winter (December–February)
Cold and dry in most of the country, with heavy snow in Hokkaido and the north; Tokyo and the south stay milder. A warm coat, with proper snow gear needed only for the northern regions.
One Thing Locals Notice
Visible tattoos can still draw attention or restrict entry at traditional baths and some onsen — worth checking ahead if that applies to your trip. For the full trip breakdown, see our Japan travel guide.
