The world’s top tourism earner by revenue, and a country too large to plan for as a single destination.
Where to Stay
In New York, Midtown puts you near major sights but costs more; Brooklyn neighborhoods like Williamsburg trade a short subway ride for lower prices and better food. Elsewhere, a rental car often opens up more affordable stays outside city centers. More options in our stay guide.
What to Eat
Regional food varies enormously — deep-dish in Chicago, breakfast tacos in Austin, real barbecue in the South. Skip the chains near tourist attractions and look a few blocks further for where locals actually eat.
Sample 3-Day Itinerary (New York City)
Day 1 — Central Park & Museums
Walk Central Park, spend the late morning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, then stroll Fifth Avenue and end the day with dinner in the Upper West Side or Midtown.
Day 2 — Lower Manhattan & Brooklyn
Take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, visit the 9/11 Memorial, then walk the Brooklyn Bridge toward sunset and have dinner in DUMBO.
Day 3 — High Line & Midtown Views
Walk the High Line to Chelsea Market for lunch, then take in the skyline from an observation deck and end around Times Square at night.
Opening times and ticket rules change — check each sight before you go.
What to Wear
Distances and climates vary wildly by region, so pack for exactly where you’re going rather than “America” in general — desert Southwest and coastal New England call for completely different wardrobes.
