What to wear in Spain

Spain’s dress code shifts sharply between beach and city, and just as sharply between seasons — what works on the sand in August doesn’t work in Madrid in January.
Spring (March–May)
Mild and sunny, generally 15–22°C, with cooler evenings. Light layers during the day, a jacket for after dark.
Summer (June–August)
Hot, especially inland — Madrid and Seville regularly pass 35°C, while coastal cities like Barcelona add humidity on top of the heat. Breathable, natural fabrics and a hat matter more than style here.
Autumn (September–November)
Warm through September, cooling steadily by November. Light layers early on, a proper jacket by late autumn.
Winter (December–February)
Mild on the coast, noticeably colder inland and at night — a mid-weight coat covers most of the country, though the south rarely needs much more than a warm layer.
One Thing Locals Notice
Swimwear or flip-flops away from the beach or pool area stand out immediately — pack a cover-up and sandals for the walk back. For the full trip breakdown, see our Spain travel guide.
